Messerschmitt KR200
The Messerschmitt KR200, or Kabinenroller (Cabin Scooter), was a three-wheeled tandem-seat scooter designed by the aircraft engineer Fritz Fend and produced in the factory of the German aircraft manufacturer Messerschmitt from 1955 to 1964.
This is powered by a 191cc Sachs two stroke engine which is capable of 60mph. To engage reverse gear, the engine has to be turned off and restarted by depressing the ignition key, thus starting the engine backwards, the driver can then change up through all the gears in reverse. 60mph in reverse!
We started work on this Messerschmitt earlier this year. It arrived in boxes of bits containing parts from two other Schmitts as well.
The work was started by shotblasting all the panels which were immediately sprayed with epoxy primer, shaping work was next; mock fitting all panels before priming and painting.
The Messerschmitt has been restored with new parts as necessary, rebuilding the engine and gearbox. A new wiring loom has been fitted. A new red interior is in the car.
What a machine! Serious fun to drive, steers like a gokart and so different from anything you can legally drive on the road.
Our thanks to the Messerschmitt owners club whose advice has been invaluable throughout this project.
